You don’t have to be a bad homeowner, a poor parent, or an inefficient, lazy adult to dislike chores. No one wakes up in the morning enthused and excited by the idea of doing laundry. However, these are, of course, the habits we need to keep up with to lead comfortable, hygienic, well-ordered lives. If these chores were never completed, our living standards would degrade.
For this reason, most of us grudgingly accept that at the weekend, we need to clean parts of our house and keep up with the rest of it through the week. While nobody really enjoys spending their free time scrubbing, dusting, and picking up after the kids, it’s important to do so.
That might leave you feeling a little deflated – unless you take a different approach. Instead of resigning yourself to hours of housework each week, why not explore some clever alternatives that could actually make chores feel…well, less chore-like?
Modern Conveniences Are Fine
We all have appliances in our house, or know of smart devices that could benefit our daily lifestyle, so why not put them to work? A good first step could be a robotic vacuum that can keep your floors tidy while you’re out living your best life.
Or, try a smart washing machine that’ll handle your laundry from start to finish with just a few taps on your phone. Some models can even order their own detergent when you’re running low! From that same smartphone, you can access troubleshooting advice such as if your GE washer won’t drain, and figure out a repair fix.
There’s usually a device out there that can help you, and save you a touch of time.
It’s Okay To Take a Shortcut
If you’ve got the means, outsourcing certain chores can be helpful. You don’t have to be rich or wealthy for these shortcuts either. It’s why many of us head into a drive-through car wash from time to time instead of sponging the thing down ourselves. Hiring a local cleaning service to give your home that spotless, just-cleaned feel occasionally could be nice if you’re heading back after a vacation, or have held a large dinner party. Or take advantage of pick-up/drop-off laundry services that’ll have your clothes washed, dried, and neatly folded before a big event. You’re not lazy for opting or these services as a treat, you’re helping someone earn a living.
You’re Allowed To Have Fun
Chore time is time that we’re occupied, sure, but not necessarily mentally. Instead of treating chores as this looming cloud of drudgery, you could buy a great pair of headphones, place your smartphone in your pocket, and listen to the latest podcast you like. You might crank up some tunes and dance around while cleaning your plywood floors. You might even do some stretches or bodyweight workouts to keep your heart rate up while cleaning to work out.
Perhaps you can even get your family involved and use the time to bond and talk about topics that interest you. No one says you have to do chores in silent reflection, so don’t be afraid to have fun!
